This is one instrument I'd love to learn, but dad is not willing to get me a set. i've heard a podcast on how they are played, and it doesn't seem too difficult, though that may be only because I ... never mind, rambling. Sorry. Anyway, if anyone has any ideas on how I could get started teaching myself, that would be very helpful. thanks.

Hi, I tried playing the bagpypes at school. It isn't easy. there is 23 lesons to go threw and I cant get past the third one. You start with the chanter before attaching it to the bag. The chanter makes the tune. There are different kinds of bagpypes from all over the world, from Ireland, Spain, Brazil, England and the highland bagpypes from Scotland. Also the smallpypes that you start with once you have learned to play them.

I started taking lesson when I was in the seventh grade or so. Never took the time to get beyond the chanter. As Michelle said, they aren't as simple as it seems at first glance. There are some really interesting fingerings that go with changing notes that create some really interesting articulations. I'd start by doing a google on either the Saint Andrew's Society, or the Society of Saint Andrew. They are a Scottish organiozation from what I've been told, and you might find a local affiliate in your area, and from there, find a way to learn bagpipes. School not keeping you busy enough yet? (smile).

Good luck.

Um, how can you teach yourself to play them when you're not able to get a set? any instrument takes daily practice, but even if you can find the lessons, I don't know how you'd be able to practice if you're not allowed to get a set for yourself.

I am a piper. If you need lessons, please let me know and we can work something online.
